Wallpaper Removal in Opa-locka, Florida

The short answer

We remove wallpaper in Opa-locka by scoring or peeling the face, softening the adhesive, scraping carefully and then washing off residue. Any damage to plaster or drywall is repaired and primed so the wall is ready for whatever comes next.

Taking wallpaper down sounds simple until you start pulling and the face peels away, leaving a stubborn layer of backing glued to the wall. In older Opa-locka homes there may be two or three generations of paper stacked together, sometimes painted over, sometimes hung directly on unprimed plaster. Dream Wallpaper Installers comes in from Hialeah, around four miles away, to strip wallpaper from rooms across 33054 and leave the walls ready for paint or a fresh paper.

Signs it is time for the old paper to go

Some homeowners call us because they simply want a new look. Others notice problems: seams curling at the top, bubbles along the middle of a wall, dark spots near the ceiling of a bathroom or a musty smell in a closet. In a humid climate, these symptoms can mean moisture has gotten behind the paper. Removing it lets the wall dry, lets us see what is really underneath, and gives you a sound surface to work with.

  • Lifting or curling seams that keep coming back after regluing
  • Stains or discoloration that suggest moisture behind the paper
  • Dated patterns you want gone before selling or renting
  • Painted-over wallpaper that is cracking and showing seam lines through the paint
  • Plans to hang a new paper, which almost always needs a bare, primed wall

Our removal process, step by step

First we protect the room. Floors are covered, baseboards are taped, and outlets and switches are turned off at the breaker where we are working with water. Furniture is moved to the center of the room or out entirely.

Next we test a section to see how the paper behaves. Strippable papers often release in full sheets once a corner is lifted. Peelable papers leave a backing layer that needs soaking. Traditional papers, and anything painted over, usually need to be scored lightly so the softening solution can reach the glue. We use a mix of warm water and a wallpaper stripping agent, and where appropriate a steamer for stubborn layers.

Scraping is done with wide, slightly rounded blades held at a low angle, which helps avoid gouging plaster or tearing the paper face of drywall. Once the paper is off, we wash the walls to remove remaining paste, because dried adhesive left behind will cause paint to crackle and new wallpaper to fail.

Plaster, drywall and what lies beneath

Many Opa-locka homes have plaster walls over concrete block. Plaster is tough and handles soaking well, but it can hide old cracks and patches that appear once the paper comes off. Drywall is more delicate: if it was never primed before the original paper was hung, the glue may have bonded directly to the drywall face paper. In that case aggressive soaking can blister the surface.

When that happens we stop soaking, let the area dry, seal the torn spots with a shellac or oil-based primer, and skim them smooth. It takes a little longer, but it saves the wall from replacement.

Timing removal around the weather

Removal introduces a lot of water into a room. During the wet season from May through October, the air in Miami-Dade is already heavy, and walls dry more slowly. We run fans, keep the AC on, and give the walls enough time to dry fully before priming or painting. Rushing this step is one of the most common causes of paint peeling after a wallpaper removal job.

If you plan to repaint or repaper right after, we will tell you how long the walls need. In some rooms that is a matter of hours; on thick plaster after a long soak, it can stretch to a day or more.

After the paper is gone

We leave the walls clean, repaired and, if you want, primed. You can hire your own painter, paint it yourself, or have us hang a new wallpaper. If you are switching to paper again, a wallpaper primer gives the next installer a better surface and makes future removal far easier.

Areas we cover

We strip wallpaper throughout Opa-locka and nearby, including Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, North Miami, Miami Springs and Hialeah Gardens. A few photos of the room and a close-up of a seam help us estimate how involved the removal will be.

FAQ

Common questions

Can painted-over wallpaper be removed?

Usually, yes. The paint layer slows things down because it blocks water, so we score the surface and allow more soak time before scraping.

Will removal damage my walls?

Some minor damage is common, especially on drywall that was never primed. We repair and seal those spots as part of the job.

Is it messy?

It involves water and wet paper, but we protect floors and furniture, bag the debris as we go and wash the walls before we leave.

How long does removal take?

A single room usually takes a day. Multiple layers, painted paper or extensive wall repairs can extend that.

Do you check for mold behind the paper?

We look for and point out any staining or growth we see. If it looks significant, we recommend having it assessed before new finishes go on.

Can I paint right after removal?

Only after the walls are clean, dry and primed. Painting over leftover paste or damp walls often leads to cracking or peeling.
