The short answer
Wallpaper is worth it when you want pattern, texture or a finish paint cannot give, in any room that is not constantly wet. A proper install includes wall repair and priming, careful measuring, a plumb first strip, matched patterns across tight seams and clean trimming at every edge.
Paint covers a wall; wallpaper changes how a room feels. A botanical print can make a small guest room feel like a garden, a subtle stripe can make a low ceiling seem taller, and a textured non-woven can hide the slightly wavy plaster that comes with an older home. Dream Wallpaper Installers hangs traditional paper, non-woven, prepasted and specialty wallcoverings for homeowners in Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens, Miami Lakes, Medley and the rest of the nearby Miami-Dade area. If you are weighing wallpaper against paint, or you have already picked a pattern and need it hung properly, the sections below explain how we approach a standard installation from the first walkthrough to cleanup.
Choosing wallpaper over paint
Pattern is the obvious reason people pick wallpaper, but it is not the only one. Wallcoverings also bring texture, a woven, embossed or flocked surface that paint simply cannot reproduce, and they hold up longer than a painted wall in many situations. A quality non-woven paper can stay on the wall for many years with nothing more than an occasional wipe, while flat paint in a busy hallway may need touchups often.
Some rooms suit it better than others. Dining rooms, bedrooms, powder rooms, home offices, nurseries and entry halls are classic spots. A single feature wall is a low-commitment way to try a bold print. Full bathrooms and kitchens can take wallpaper too, provided you choose a moisture-tolerant vinyl or coated product and the room has solid ventilation. We help you match the material to the room, not just the look.
- Non-woven: breathable, dimensionally stable, usually strips off dry
- Traditional paper: classic prints, needs careful booking and handling
- Prepasted: activated with water, quicker for simple rooms
- Vinyl-coated: wipeable, good for kitchens and baths
- Specialty: grasscloth, metallic, flocked and murals
Wall readiness and primer
We begin with the surface you already have. Holes and dents get filled and sanded, loose paint is scraped, old wallpaper is removed, and textured walls are skim coated if the new paper is thin enough for the texture to telegraph through. Hialeah homes built with concrete-block exterior walls often have plaster over the block, so we also check those walls for hollow spots and dampness.
Then the wall receives a wallcovering primer, not just a coat of leftover paint. This specialty primer controls how fast the wall absorbs paste, lets us slide panels into position during the match, and makes future removal far less destructive. When your paper has a light background, we tint the primer so nothing shows through at the seams.
The installation itself
Measurement and layout. We measure each wall, confirm you have enough rolls with matching batch numbers, and plan where the pattern should start. A large motif is usually centered on the main wall or on a fireplace so it looks intentional from the doorway. The final, mismatched seam goes somewhere quiet, often a corner behind a door.
Cutting and matching. Strips are cut with extra length for trimming. With a straight match, the design lines up horizontally on each strip; with a drop match, alternate strips are offset by half the repeat. We cut in sequence, check each match against the previous strip on the table, and number the backs.
Pasting and hanging. Depending on the paper, we paste the back and book it, paste the wall directly for non-wovens, or soak prepasted strips. The first strip hangs on a plumb line drawn with a laser or level, because corners and door frames are rarely straight. Each next strip slides into position, the pattern is aligned along the full height, and the seam is butted snug.
Seams and finishing. Seams are pressed with a seam roller, using light pressure on embossed papers so the texture is not flattened. Paste is wiped from the face, ceiling and trim with clean water as we work. Trimming at the ceiling, baseboard, windows and doors is done along a broad knife with a fresh blade. Outlet and switch plates go back on, and many installers cover the plates with matching paper on request.
Factors that set the scope of your project
We give a written quote after seeing the room, because the details change the labor. Wall condition comes first: damaged, textured or previously papered walls require prep. The type of paper matters next; delicate papers, hand-printed goods and unpasted products take more time than prepasted ones.
Pattern repeat affects how much paper is used and how long matching takes. A large drop match on a tall wall is slower than a small, random-match texture. Finally, room size, ceiling height, staircases and the number of windows, doors and cabinets all add up. A simple rectangular bedroom and a two-story foyer with angled walls are very different jobs.
Caring for wallpaper in a humid climate
Read the care symbol on the roll label, then clean accordingly. Spongeable papers tolerate a damp cloth; washable and scrubbable vinyls can take mild soap. Dust uncoated papers lightly. Always test in a hidden spot first.
In South Florida, the air itself is the main concern. Summer brings heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, so keep the air conditioning steady and run bathroom fans during and after showers. Avoid shutting the AC off for long trips in summer. After a power outage during hurricane season, dry the house out as quickly as possible and look over the seams. Save a spare roll in a dry closet for future patch repairs.
