The short answer
Grasscloth can look beautiful in Hialeah Gardens homes when it goes on a dry, primed interior wall in a low-splash room. Expect visible seams and natural color variation; our job is to keep them straight, tight and evenly distributed.
Real grasscloth is woven from plants, and plants do not come off a factory line identical. That is the charm and the challenge. In Hialeah Gardens, a short drive of about 3 miles west of our Hialeah base, we hang sisal, jute, seagrass and arrowroot coverings in living rooms, bedrooms and offices for owners who want texture instead of print. If you are weighing grasscloth for your home, this page lays out the honest trade-offs, the conditions it needs, and how our crew installs it so the finished wall looks calm and deliberate rather than patchy.
The Honest Trade-Offs
Before anyone orders, we like clients to know three things. First, seams will show. Grasscloth is woven in strips and cannot be pattern-matched, so every join is visible up close. Second, shade will vary from bolt to bolt and sometimes within one bolt. Third, the material stains with water, oil and even the natural oils from hands.
If those traits sound like character rather than flaws, grasscloth will probably make you happy. If you want a perfectly uniform look that can be scrubbed, a vinyl faux grasscloth may be the better fit, and we install both.
Conditions Grasscloth Needs
The ideal setting is an interior wall in a room with steady air conditioning, no shower or sink nearby, and little chance of being brushed by wet hands or pets. In the typical Hialeah Gardens house, that points to the living room, the primary bedroom, a study or a formal dining room.
We avoid kitchens, full bathrooms and laundry areas. Steam, splashes and cooking grease all leave permanent marks on natural fibers. Exterior concrete-block walls can be used, but only after a moisture meter confirms they are dry, since block draws in rain during the wet months from May through October.
- Interior walls with steady AC
- Rooms without showers, tubs or sinks
- Low-traffic areas away from kitchen splash
- Walls that read dry on a moisture meter
Getting the Surface Right
Some grasscloths are thin enough that the wall color underneath peeks through gaps in the weave. We match a tinted primer to the grasscloth's background color so any gaps disappear. The primer also seals the wall so paste does not soak in unevenly, and it lets the grasscloth be stripped later without tearing the drywall face.
Older plaster-on-block walls in some homes have small cracks and bumps. Grasscloth hides minor texture better than smooth paper does, but larger defects still telegraph. We fill, sand and spot-prime before the overall coat goes on.
Installation Technique
Each bolt is unrolled and inspected under good light. We sort bolts by shade, assigning the closest matches to the most visible wall and saving any odd ones for short pieces above doors or behind tall furniture. When a manufacturer instructs it, alternating panels are reversed top to bottom, which spreads color drift evenly across the wall.
Paste goes only on the back, never on the face. We use a clean dry roller on seams and a soft brush rather than a sponge to press the material flat. Fresh blades on every trim keep fibers from snagging. The result is a wall where seams form a regular, quiet rhythm instead of a jarring line.
Keeping Grasscloth Looking Good
Light dusting with a soft brush vacuum attachment is all the routine care it needs. For a spill, blot with a dry cloth immediately and do not rub. Keep window treatments closed during the brightest part of the day if the wall gets direct sun, since natural dyes can fade.
If you leave home during hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30, keep the AC on a set temperature so humidity does not climb inside a closed house. We offer the same installation in Medley, Miami Lakes, Doral, Miramar and Miami Springs.
